WASHINGTON (Nov. 30, 2001) - The American
Crop Protection Association will become CropLife America Jan. 1,
reflecting the broadening scope of the plant science industry's
focus and activities.
"This
is more than just a name change, it's a change in the way we think
about our industry and its positive contributions to society,"
said James C. Borel, ACPA chairman of the board and president, crop
protection, DuPont Agriculture and Nutrition. "CropLife America
will reflect our industry's multiple technologies, including agricultural
biotechnology and crop protection chemicals. With this new mandate,
we will do our utmost to communicate to our many constituencies,
especially the public, in a transparent and proactive manner, addressing
societal concerns while pursuing our goals of achieving food security
and agricultural sustainability."
"The
CropLife America name will align us with our industry's global federation,
CropLife International, and its broader mission of meeting the challenges
posed to worldwide agriculture in the new century," added ACPA
president Jay J. Vroom. "ACPA and CropLife America are the
largest members of our global federation, which is headquartered
in Brussels, Belgium." CropLife International was launched
in June 2001; it was formerly known as the Global Crop Protection
Federation.
CropLife
America was founded in 1933 as the Agricultural Insecticide and
Fungicide Association. In 1949, the name was changed to the National
Agricultural Chemicals Association and in 1994 it was changed to
American Crop Protection Association. CropLife America's 78 members
are global leaders in the development of existing and emerging agricultural
technologies for the enhancement of crop production.
A
special launch event is scheduled to debut the new CropLife America
name Tuesday evening Dec. 11, 2001 in Washington, D.C.
