WASHINGTON,
Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/
-- The Centers for Disease Control have issued new warnings that
the West Nile Virus has spread farther and faster this year than
ever before, reaching nine states from Massachusetts to Florida.
With
the spread and subsequent increased threats, also comes an increased
need for reliable information. The West Nile Virus Information Center
web site at http://www.pestfacts.org/wnv
fills that need. Sponsored by RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound
Environment), the site contains the latest news about the virus,
information on the safe use of products to combat mosquitoes, and
links to a number of health and educational resources.
The
movement of the virus from its origins in the Northeast can be seen
in those diagnosed with the virus this year. An Atlanta woman died
in early August, becoming the year's first West Nile virus fatality.
Additionally, two Florida residents have been diagnosed with encephalitis
caused by the virus. Two people in the New York City area also have
contracted the virus in 2001. This year has also seen more than
150 birds infected.
West
Nile virus first appeared in New York City in 1999. Between 1999
and 2000, there were 78 confirmed cases in humans and nine deaths,
all in New York and New Jersey.
While
mosquitoes are getting a lot of press for spreading West Nile virus,
there are a number of other mosquito-borne diseases including Eastern
Equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria and yellow
fever.
Although
most people aren't at high risk for West Nile virus or other mosquito-borne
diseases, people should make a habit of avoiding mosquitoes and
keeping them from breeding. Precautions include wearing repellent,
particularly in late afternoon and evening when mosquitoes are most
prevalent, and eliminating standing water where they breed.
A
thoughtful and balanced approach to pest management can be a very
effective tool to providing a solution to these mosquito problems.
The use of pest control products can eradicate mosquitoes and other
pests. Integrated pest management, a thoughtful and balanced approach
to managing pests, can take many forms. For mosquitoes these include
sanitation, elimination of mosquito breeding areas, structural repair
such as windows and door screens, as well as judicious use of pest
control products.
